No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
