Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

The wider defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official activities, from transport use to discussions habits.
