The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
